Dangerous New Android Malware Discovered

Just when you think you’ve done everything right when it comes to your Android’s security, a new security hole puts 10 million phones at risk.

It seemed like Android malware was on the decline, but everything just changed. In a surprising turn of events, it has been discovered that more than 10 million Android phones are sitting ducks for hackers.

Unfortunately, it turns out that hundreds of apps in the Google Play store possess a security issue that could allow hackers access to any phone that has installed them.

According to a paper published by the University of Michigan, a team of researchers found that apps that make open ports on cellphones are leaving behind major security holes. In fact, the University of Michigan team scanned 24,000 apps and revealed that more than 400 apps are vulnerable, with fifty-seven of them discovered to undoubtedly possess the Android malware. With at least one of those apps receiving millions of downloads, this is a huge problem.  

What’s the big deal? Well, if you’ve downloaded any of these apps, malware could have been installed on your phone remotely. Your personal data, like your contacts, images, and even bank account information could be stolen. One of the apps that has been infiltrated is the WiFi File Transfer app, which has been downloaded by users between 10 million and 50 million times. Sure, it’s simple to transfer docs from a phone to a laptop, but with the security issue it would also be easy for a hacker to start transferring your files, too.
