Why It’s Important to Update Your Mobile Apps

You’re in the checkout lane, or you’re commuting to work, and you have nothing to do. You decide to grab your phone and play a game, pay a bill, post on social media, or maybe just take a quick picture. That’s when it happens: the dreaded update screen pops up and you’re told that you need to update to the latest version. You’re fine with the previous version, so maybe you’re tempted to just let it be. We’ve all been there.

Unfortunately, this decision to “let it be” is dangerous because, most of the time, an app has an update available to fix a newly-discovered vulnerability. Nonetheless, use DFNDR’s Security Scan feature to make sure that your device, applications, and information are all safe and out of harm’s way. Devices are constantly targeted by cybercriminals, but with the help of DFNDR, your device memory and SD card will be monitored and protected so that you don’t fall victim to viruses and malware. New features might be a more fun reason to update, but neglecting to get the latest version of an app can put you and your device in danger. It may feel like developers have you update your apps too often, but it’s very important to do. Maybe you have a “good reason” for putting off an update, like having limited mobile data, but it’s always important to update an app as soon as possible. The longer you put off updating an app, the more danger you may be in. Your login credentials and personal information is vulnerable if the app is left unpatched.

If you ever do have to put off updating your apps until you’re on your home Wi-Fi network, don’t stress about being attacked by a hacker or a virus in the meantime. As long as you update your apps as soon as possible, and regularly scan your device for malware, your device will still be okay.

Other Reasons to Update Your Apps

In addition to necessary security patches, many app updates offer bug fixes and new features. However, that doesn’t mean security shouldn’t be your number one concern — that is the primary reason you should install updates, even if you don’t want to install an unpopular update that other users’ regret installing. If you really don’t want to install a particular update, see if you can find the details of what the update includes before you make your decision.
