How to Use and Connect with the Instagram App

If you aren’t using the Instagram app, you’re missing out on a one-of-a-kind, photo-sharing experience. Ready to get started?

It’s hard to remember life (or photos) before the Instagram app. Millions of users worldwide snap, and share images via this Android app each day. Isn’t it time you joined in on the fun?

How to Get Started
First, you need to head to the Google Play Store to download the free Instagram app. After it installs, you’ll have to create an account.

Choose a username and password that you want to use as your identifier across the app. Every time you upload an image, or write a comment, this name will be visible. It could be your actual name, your blog’s brand name, or something that reflects your tastes. Whatever it is, make sure it suits you!

Next, choose an image for your profile. Again, this should reflect you. Unless you are creating a themed account–something that revolves around toys, flowers, or even vintage furniture–this image should show your face. Whatever you do, keep it consistent.

Connect With Others
If you have connected the Instagram app to Facebook, you can easily find friends from that social network, and connect them to this one. Facebook and Instagram are owned by the same company, so they play well together.

You can also choose to manually add friends, or follow the Instagram accounts Facebook recommends. Click on the magnifying glass icon at the bottom of the app, and then on the account icon in the upper right-hand corner. This will let you explore and discover all the other Instagram accounts out there.

Follow accounts thoughtfully. Whoever you choose to follow will fill your feed with images daily. Make sure they are images you want to see. If you don’t want your images spread across Instagram, you may elect to make your account private.

If you have a private account, people will still be able to find you, view your profile picture, and read your bio, but they will not be able to see your Instagram posts unless you approve their request for access.

Make the Most of It
Once your profile is complete, and you’ve begun to follow other accounts, you will see your newly populated feed. If you want to take pictures right from the Instagram app, simply click the central camera icon.

After that, you can add filters, play around with colors, shadows, and highlights, and make your photos truly your own. Don’t forget to add some hashtags! These will make your images more searchable, and connect you with other communities. #PSafe, anyone?
