Whether a hacker wants to steal credit information or keep operating systems under lockdown until victims pay a fee \u2014 this is called ransomware \u2014 it seems like there\u2019s always a new hack of which we should be wary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But most of the time, those hacks don\u2019t do extreme damage or are remedied fast enough that most people forget all about them. An Internet provider based in Amsterdam called Cyberbunker found its emails blocked by Spamhaus, and they retaliated with a denial of service attacks \u2014 a huge one. The attacker \u2014 later arrested \u2014 caused Internet connections all over Europe to slow down massively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sony Pictures Hack<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hackers in North Korea really didn\u2019t want to see the comedy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Interview<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released. The movie\u2019s plot was focused on killing their leader, Kim Jong-Un, and to prevent its screeners, these hackers downed Sony Pictures\u2019 computers and repeatedly froze emails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>NASA and Department of Defense Hack<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This attack at the beginning of the 2000s is memorable because of how massive it was. 15-year-old Jonathan James and 35-year-old Scot Gary McKinnon hacked into NASA in 1999 by hacking computers at the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency. Later, they hacked into the source code for the International Space Station\u2019s life support systems \u2014 a hack that cost $41,000 to repair. But the real reason people remember the hack is because of the teenaged <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James\u2019 prison sentence and subsequent suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Mt. Gox Hack<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mt. Gox, the largest Bitcoin exchange in the world circa 2014, lost millions of dollars because of a sophisticated bug that locked users out of their accounts. In all, hackers stole $460 million worth of Bitcoin money over three to four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Stuxnet<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Microsoft Windows worm that infected <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tested.com\/tech\/456273-biggest-computer-hacks-all-time\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siemens industrial controllers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this malware \u2014 discovered in 2010 \u2014 targeted uranium enrichment facilities in Iran and stopped operations in nuclear power plants by making centrifuges operate abnormally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are there other hacks you remember that we haven\u2019t included on this list?
