The Most Developer-Friendly Android Phones

Looking for a smartphone that can do more than just make calls? Want the ability to have full reign over your phone’s look and functionality? Then look no further, here’s a list of the most developer-friendly Android phones.

HTC Nexus One
Created by Google, the HTC Nexus One has a sleek interface and comes with an unlockable bootloader which allows users to load a custom ROM and overclock the phone’s CPU.

Samsung Galaxy S
The Samsung Galaxy S is a hugely popular phone that each of the major four U.S. carriers have their own branded versions of, which makes for a lot of developing over a family of similar devices. You can mod and create custom ROMs for the T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T versions of the phone.

HTC Desire
A close sibling of the Nexus One, the HTC shares many similar aesthetics and dimensions as the Google phone. The Desire has officially supported updates to Android 2.2 Froyo and an unsupported update to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Desire has a huge development community and even has some well-optimized ports of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Line
While not widely released, Sony Ericsson has made its Xperia line very developer-friendly. Just this year they released instructions on how to unlock the bootloader on its upcoming Xperia Arc, Neo, Play and Pro handsets.

Motorola Droid
The Motorola Droid comes with an unlocked bootloader, which gives users the ability to flash custom kernels as well as ROMs, allowing for more control over the phone’s hardware than would otherwise be possible.

HTC Incredible and HTC EVO 4G
Rounding out this list are two more HTC phones, the Incredible and the EVO 4G. After downloading the Unrevoked3 software, all you have to do is connect your HTC Incredible or EVO 4G to your desktop PC and let the program run. You’ll be given root permissions and the ability to create custom ROMs and apps otherwise blocked by HTC.
