New: Netflix Lets Users Download Content Offline

Marathon T.V. watchers everywhere: your time has come. If you haven’t already heard, Netflix now allows viewers to download content offline! That means if you’ve been binge watching your way through Narcos, impeded only by a 9-to-5 work commitment, the Netflix app offers a “download” option to store your favorite shows on your phone or tablet. With programs made available offline, your dreaded commute just got a little brighter.

The exciting roll out

Dedicated Netflix users have been begging for this feature for a while now. And though they’ve fallen on the deaf ears of Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, who stood adamantly opposed to the idea, the tides have finally turned. There are only two caveats: for now, the download option is only available to smartphones and tablets. Secondly, not everything is available for download just yet. However, fan favorites like Stranger Things and Orange is the New Black are among the chosen ones.

When would I need to use this feature?

Most will find the download feature works best during a commute or generally on the go. The obvious examples are train or plane rides, or even hotels and remote locations that have limited Internet access. There are also venues that provide Internet access, but at a lofty price. Depending on what you’re looking to do, this is a great way to avoid unnecessary expenditures.

How do I use it?

First, be sure your Android is up to date (Android 4.4.2 or later) and that you have (or download) the latest Netflix app. When you’re ready to save content, begin by searching Netflix’s “Available for Download” list, or simply enter the show or movie you want in the search view. Before selecting to download, keep in mind that if you’re on a limited data plan, downloading content is treated like streaming. If you don’t have an unlimited plan, it’s best to accomplish this via an Internet connection. Once downloaded, it’s a simple click and play to watch. You won’t need the Internet, and, if you’re a monthly subscriber, there are no extra fees for the service. Just be sure you prepare and save in advance!

Keeping up with the market

A smart move by Netflix, which has millions of paying users across countries worldwide, it’s projected to increase their subscribers. In the competitive market environment of subscription video-on-demand, platforms must outdo each other’s offers to stay in the game. Between offers from Amazon (Prime Video offers content for download) as well as YouTube Red, this was the clear next move in Netflix’s evolution.
