Unsecured Wi-Fi is a wireless network that permits connection without individual authentication or strong access control. Public hotspots may be completely open or may share one password among many guests. Modern HTTPS encrypts most website and app content, but fake hotspots, phishing portals, exposed local services, and outdated devices still create risk.
Open, public, and fake Wi-Fi
Open Wi-Fi describes the networkâs access configuration. Public Wi-Fi describes who it is offered to. A legitimate public network may use a guest password. A fake hotspot copies a venueâs name to attract connections and may be open or password-protected.
Network names are not unique. Confirm the exact name and sign-in process with the venue instead of choosing by signal strength.
What encryption protects
HTTPS protects content between the app or browser and the correctly validated destination. Stop on certificate or privacy warnings. Encryption does not verify a store, caller, payment request, or captive portal.
A reputable VPN can encrypt traffic to the VPN provider. It does not prove that the hotspot is genuine or prevent phishing.
Safer use
Keep the device updated, turn off file sharing and automatic connection, and use official apps or known addresses. Prefer cellular data or a personal hotspot for sensitive tasks when the public network cannot be verified. Forget the network after use.
