LG Has a New Bluetooth Speaker That Floats

But is this speaker’s power to levitate a useful tool or a gimmick?

There are a lot of cool Bluetooth devices already available to connect to your Android. But we haven’t seen all of the possibilities available for this technology yet — more exciting tech is still to come. LG’s new floating Bluetooth speaker — called “Levitating Portable Speaker” — was unveiled in early 2017 and does something most other Bluetooth technologies don’t: it levitates in mid-air. Cool, right? The following will answer some of the questions you may have about this incredible speaker.

Is LG’s product the first speaker that floats?
No. Many companies have been experimenting with these types of mid-air Bluetooth speakers for years now. LG is getting so much buzz for its speaker because it’s the first well-known electronics brand to make a product like this one.

Why did LG make this speaker?
LG says they wanted to create a piece of technology that was attractive and innovative.

How does the Levitating Portable Speaker work?
The speaker itself, a small white egg, floats over a base called the Levitation Station. The floating effect happens because the Levitation Station holds electromagnetics to make the speaker float.

Is the product itself any good?
The speaker offers 360-degree sound. This means that you can listen to it clearly, no matter where you are in the house. The speaker alone might not provide exceptional sound, so the Levitation Station also comes outfitted with a subwoofer for deep bass supplemental sound. The product itself also has a long battery life: LG promises 10 hours. You’ll know when the speaker is out of battery, too, because the floating speaker descends to the Levitation Station.

What about other features?
The speaker is water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about listening to it outside or in the bathroom. Another feature that will likely prove popular (as more and more devices become Bluetooth-enabled) is the speaker’s ability to connect to more than one Bluetooth device at once. This capability is known as Multipoint technology.

How much does a Levitating Portable Speaker cost?
LG hasn’t released the product or the product’s estimated price yet, so the final costs remain to be seen. However, devices like this one typically range from $100 to $1,000, so it’s not easy to predict where LG might price their product within this range. As to how many people will be interested in purchasing a floating Bluetooth speaker, it is still unknown. The technology certainly sounds cool, but if it is too expensive, it will mostly likely turn many potential users away.
